Two types of pain: Avoidable and unavoidable
Some pain in life is unavoidable, and some pain is avoidable. Examples of unavoidable pain would be a rare and fatal blood cancer or a drunk driver crashing across the median and into your car at 60 mph.

On the other hand, suppose we ignore all the warnings and smoke four packs of cigarettes a day for 40 years and then develop lung cancer. Or, what if a man is selfish, ill tempered, constantly demeans his wife, eventually gets divorced and ends up living as a miserable, lonely old man. This shows that we clearly bring all kinds of pain on ourselves simply by the bad choices we make -- avoidable pain.
