Most Jews have believed in the coming of the Messiah throughout their history. The Hebrew Scriptures made it clear that no one measured up to God's requirement of holiness, even before the law was given to Moses. They also knew that a payment had to be made in order to satisfy God's demand for justice. They knew God was not lenient; He would not ignore sin or let it go unpunished. That's why they offered sacrifices which God told them He would accept as payment for sin. God provided them forgiveness not based on their ability to follow His laws, but based on a just payment for sin and their faith in that payment. God said He would accept those sacrifices as symbols of the ultimate sacrifice that the promised Messiah would one day offer.
