When we come to God offering our good deeds even as a partial payment, it not only fails to impress Him but is the ultimate offense and insult to His great gift of grace. The only proper response is to humbly accept that offer of grace and forgiveness.

If someone saved your son's life, you would be looking for ways to show gratitude the rest of your life. That happens to be one of the legitimate responses, one of the valid motivations, for living life in a way that pleases God -- not to earn forgiveness but to thank Him for the forgiveness you've already received.
