really died? Jesus was whipped with 40 lashes -- a process that literally ripped the flesh off a person's back. He was so weakened by the beating and the blood loss that he couldn't carry the crossbeam to the place of the crucifixion. Then, they nailed him to the cross, where he hung for hours -- typical for a Roman crucifixion. The executioner standing there pronounced him dead. |
