Normally the soldiers working a crucifixion, after too much time wore on, would break the legs of the victims so that they couldn't hold themselves to allow for breathing. Breaking the legs would result in the victim collapsing and suffocating. The executioner said, in this instance, it wasn't necessary to break Jesus' legs because he was already dead. But, for good measure, he stuck a spear in his side, and blood and water came out -- a further indication of death.
