A few months later, the same pair is hunting. While there is no storm coming, the novice remembers the experience of crossing the lake and how much time it saved and says, "Hey, on the way back, let's take the shortcut across the lake to the lodge." Well, the experienced woodsman says, "No way I'm getting on that ice! The conditions are different. The ice is thin now and very dangerous." In spite of the warning, the novice decides that he can make it and sets out. A few feet off shore, he falls through the ice and has to be rescued.
