In the first instance, the faith of the novice was weak, but the object of his faith was strong. He made it. In the second instance, his faith was very strong, but it was in a weak object. He didn't make it. The validity of the object is more important than the strength of the faith.
Since ice is a physical object, you can drill through a core sample and measure how thick it is. That's how to determine its strength. But how would someone determine whether Jesus is a valid object?
