Couldn't the body
have been stolen?
The disciples were frightened to death with the possibility of confrontation with the authorities. Some of them bragged that they wouldn't betray Jesus if it came down to a fight, but every one of them fled like a coward. If they stole the body and then went around preaching that Jesus was the Messiah who had risen from the dead, this means that this frightened and disillusioned band of men knowingly and intentionally brought persecution upon themselves. It simply doesn't make sense. Although many people die for causes, they don't die for a cause they know to be false. Had they stolen the body, they would be dying for a lie.
